Living with Vintage

Searching for vintage items is not always something we think of when considering things to purchase for our home. The kitchen is a great place to incorporate heirloom pieces. Not only are the pieces a great conversation starter, but they tell a story in their cracks, crazing, wonkiness and small, tiny little stains.

Personally, I love to embrace the oddities and curiosities of pieces that find me. It allows me to see past my natural perfectionist patterns and accept things for what they are. perfectly imperfect.

Can we get back to that conversation part again? If there is one thing I love more than vintage items it is conversation which to be honest, feels vintage sometimes with everyone constantly on the screen and distracted by social media.

It feels like no matter how big the item, pieces of latter days strike up a conversation and discussion around how things used to be or as my kids call it, “the olden days”. Imagine you invite some friends over and they bring their significant other you have never met, isn’t it nice to be able to create conversation around something you have in your home?

For instance, when I am looking for a bowl for mixing I do not think to go to a big box store. I used to though, then I realized it is way more enjoyable to support a small business and buy something that will not have lead or chemicals in it and will last the test of time. When I am not using it for mixing or making something it makes a wonderful bowl for pears, apples, or plums. I even store dishcloths in it and set it on the counter. The simple reminder of what the bowl itself represents is more than enough for me.

Linen is the same for me, I love vintage linen. It is pure and classic. Even if it has some coffee stains on it, I adore it even more. Again, it is a reminder to me that not everything has to be perfect - just beautiful and authentic.

Authenticity and integrity are sincere and important to me. They are probably my top two principles in my own life so I suppose it is no surprise that I lean towards vintage items and heirlooms.

I suppose the best part of living with vintage (for me) is knowing what I am caring for has been cared for by another, which is not only humbling, but it makes the item more of an honor to have in my home.

I hope you find something valuable here and you find a sense of joy reading these entries.

Thank you for being here, you make a difference and I appreciate you.

Merci,

Jocelyn xx
